Mary-Helen’s Birthday Number 42

We had MH’s bday party on Saturday July 28th in Brenham.  It was a great success.  We did a theme on 42, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.  A ton of kids came out, played in the car wash, pool, and baby pool.  We grilled hot dogs and sausages, and everyone had a great time.

For her actual bday we were all worn out from the weekend so didn’t do much, but did go to Churrasco’s on Thursday later in the week.

The Lion King

Alden, Mary-Helen, and I went to see the Disney production of the Lion King.  It was awesome!

Alden had a great time and was kept on the edge of his seat.  What fantastic costumes.

Ame watched Meredith, who napped most of the time we were gone.  Ame had come into town for Mary-Helen’s birthday party on Saturday.

We all watched the Disney movie of the Lion King on the couch when we got home.

NASA JSC 50th Classic Car Show

I drove the 1967 Black Corvette down to JSC today for the NASA JSC StarPort 50th Classic Car Show!  I had a great time and got to see some other classics, enjoy a hot dog, and meet car enthusiasts.  It was a great ride down and scary ride back.  I had a going away party for a co-worker after work, then had to drive home in the dark.  The instrument panel shorted out.  Also, apparently it took out the rear tail lights.  I didn’t know about that until someone graciously told me while I was driving that my tail lights weren’t working.  I pulled over and found that, after messing with the steering column and switch that the turn signal would work.  So I drove all the way home with my blinker on, but at least people could see me!  I guess I will need to replace the switch in the steering column just like I had to do for the 66.

Starport is turning 50 on July 24! To commemorate this, we will be holding several events leading up to the big date to celebrate our past, present and future. Included in these celebrations is a Classic Car Show in front of Building 1 on July 18. Since this is also the week of the anniversary of the Apollo lunar landing, we want to showcase cars that were around during the Apollo era — 1975 and older. We only have space for 40 cars (no trailers allowed), so if we have more than 40 entries, we will have a random drawing. Drivers must be badged to come on site.

Learning Invention from Edison

This is a great article about learning invention and enabling research from Edison.  Three great outtakes -

  1. Don’t be distracted and protect the laboratory.
  2. Invention over innovation.
  3. Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

A free, public event on the shores of Clear Lake will welcome the shuttle replica before beginning its journey down NASA Parkway to SCH. The arrival of the orbiter will also require changes to parking at JSC and road closures in the surrounding area in support of the event will be required.

TRAFFIC ADVISORIES:

The full size space shuttle replica will arrive at the JSC dock on NASA Parkway and Space Center Blvd. next to the Hilton the afternoon of Friday, June 1. This requires closure of a parking lot on Fifth Street between buildings 28 and 35 for public parking that day. The lot will re-open Saturday morning. Public access for parking with be through Gate 3.

Additionally, there will be road closures in the surrounding area in support of the event and transporting the shuttle down NASA Parkway to its new home at Space Center Houston.

Traffic congestion on NASA Parkway is expected due to lane closures, increased event traffic and spectators. Police officers and DPS will direct and monitor traffic in the area. It is advised that motorists who are not attending the event find an alternate route during this time. In order to keep traffic flowing, motorists are advised to observe and obey all traffic signs and public safety officials. Do not stop or slow down to view or take pictures of the shuttle.

Friday, June 1

Starting at 11 a.m. the east and westbound right lanes of NASA Parkway will be closed between Upper Bay Road and Space Center Blvd. to allow for a bus lane to shuttle people that are parked on site at JSC back and forth from JSC to the Hilton. The westbound right lane of NASA Parkway will re-open at approximately 11 p.m. The eastbound right lane of NASA Parkway will remain closed from Lagoon Drive to Space Center Blvd. Seabrook/Kemah Bridge Closure - will take place sometime between noon and 1 p.m. while the orbiter passes underneath the bridge (time is subject to change). It is estimated the bridge will be closed for thirty minutes.

Saturday, June 2nd

The eastbound right lane of NASA Parkway will remain closed between Lagoon Drive and Space Center Blvd. This lane will be closed to ensure the safety of NASA personnel while they prepare the shuttle for ground transport to Space Center Houston.

Sunday, June 3rd

From 5 to 9 a.m. ALL east and westbound lanes on NASA Parkway between El Camino Real/Egret Bay and Space Center Blvd. will be CLOSED. The NASA 1 Bypass will be closed to all eastbound traffic during this time. Traffic from I-45 will need to find an alternate route. JSC personnel requiring access to JSC during this time should use Bay Area Blvd. to Saturn Lane to access Gate 1.

At 3 a.m. on Sunday, June 3 the traffic signals on NASA Parkway at St. John Drive, Upper Bay Road and Saturn Lane will be removed. Officers will be directing traffic at each intersection during this time. Traffic signals will be immediately replaced after the shuttle has passed each intersection.

Once the shuttle has been secured and all traffic signals are properly working, NASA Parkway will reopen to motorists.

Meredith Jumps

Meredith has been advancing so quickly now!  She most recently has learned to jump.  It’s been so much fun watching her practice and learning to jump!  She will say, “Watch how high I can jump Daddy!” and will then crouch way down and jump.  It’s so cute.  She has also been great at starting to use the ‘potty’.  She went three times the other day in a row and has been going once or twice per day consistently.  Any day now she will want to stop using diapers.  Meredith is growing up so fast.
